Red discharge, often called 'red tears' or porphyrin staining, around a pet rat's eyes and nose is a common sign of stress, illness, or respiratory infection. While it looks like blood, it's actually porphyrin pigment which accumulates when a rat is unwell. Respiratory infections are highly prevalent in rats and can quickly become serious.
