I could really use some advice. I have a sweet little chihuahua who's about five weeks old now, and I'm starting to get a bit worried. Ever since I got him, he's been refusing to drink water, only wanting his milk. I’ve tried offering him water in a bowl and even tried using a dropper, but he just isn’t interested. I’m concerned because I know hydration is important, especially for such a tiny pup. I don't want to force anything that might scare him off water for good. He’s active and playful, but I’m just not sure this is normal. Has anyone else dealt with anything similar? Any tips would be super helpful right now. Thanks in advance!
Hi there! It sounds like you have a very sweet little chihuahua on your hands. At a month old, your pup is just transitioning from relying solely on milk to needing water and other nutrients. It's not uncommon for puppies at this age to prefer milk, but it's essential to encourage them to start drinking water.
One reason your puppy may not be drinking water could be simply that they're not used to it yet. Puppies this young are still learning about their environment and developing new behaviors. You can help by offering fresh, clean water regularly and gently placing a shallow dish near their usual hangout spots. Sometimes adding a tiny bit of water to their milk can help them get used to the taste and texture.
While transitioning, make sure your puppy stays hydrated. Signs of dehydration include lethargy, dry gums, and loss of skin elasticity. If you notice any of these symptoms or if your puppy refuses water for more than a day, it's important to reach out for professional advice.
