My hermit crab isn't moving and smells strange. Is it dead or molting?

[]

Answer

It can be tricky to tell the difference between a molting hermit crab and one that has passed away, as molting crabs can be very still and seem lifeless. However, a strange or foul odor is a strong indicator that the crab has died. A healthy molting crab typically won't have a strong, unpleasant smell. If there's a bad odor, it's highly likely the crab has not survived. Gently remove the crab from its tank to prevent potential harm to other tank mates, and clean the enclosure thoroughly.
