My hamster stopped moving and feels cold. What should I do?

Answer

This could be a serious situation. Hamsters can enter a state called torpor, which is similar to hibernation, if their environment becomes too cold. They appear lifeless and cold to the touch. However, it's also possible your hamster is severely ill or has passed away. If there's any chance it's torpor, try to gently and gradually warm them up by placing them in a warm (but not hot) room or holding them close to your body for a short period. Do NOT use direct heat sources like heating pads on high or hot water. If they don't respond to warming or show any signs of breathing within a short time, or if you suspect illness, veterinary attention is necessary. Gently try to rouse them but be prepared for either outcome. Speak to Dial A Vet via a video consult should you need further guidance.
