My hamster has wet tail symptoms. Is this serious?

Answer

Wet tail, or proliferative ileitis, is a very serious and often fatal bacterial disease in hamsters, especially young ones. It causes severe diarrhea, a wet matted appearance around the tail and hindquarters, lethargy, loss of appetite, and often a hunched posture. Due to the rapid dehydration and systemic illness it causes, it requires immediate veterinary attention. Without prompt and aggressive treatment – typically antibiotics and supportive care from a veterinarian experienced with exotic pets – the prognosis is poor. Keep your hamster warm and isolated from other hamsters while awaiting veterinary care. Speak to Dial A Vet via a video consult should you need further guidance.
