My gecko has shed skin stuck on its toes. How can I help remove it safely?

Answer

Retained shed on a gecko's toes is a common problem and can be serious if not addressed, as it can constrict blood flow and lead to toe loss. It's usually a sign that humidity levels in their enclosure are too low. To help, create a 'sauna' by placing your gecko in a small container lined with damp (not soaking wet) paper towels for 15-20 minutes. After the sauna, you can gently try to remove the loosened skin with a clean, damp cotton swab or tweezers, but be extremely careful not to pull hard. If it doesn't come off easily, do not force it.
