Question:

My female cat has blood in her urine, how long will the antibiotics she was prescribed need to take effect?

I'm really worried and could use some advice from fellow cat owners. My sweet girl, Luna, has been having a tough time lately. I noticed a few days ago that she was using her litter box more frequently, and when I checked, there was blood in her urine. It broke my heart to see her in discomfort like this. I took her to the vet right away, and they said she has a UTI. They've put her on antibiotics to clear it up, but I'm anxious to know how quickly she might start feeling better. She’s still straining when she goes, and it seems like she’s in pain, which is just awful to watch. Has anyone else been through this with their fur baby? How long did it take for the antibiotics to kick in for your cats? I just want to make sure I'm doing everything I can for Luna. Any advice or reassurance would mean the world to me right now. Thanks in advance!

Answer:

Hello there,

I'm glad you reached out with your concern about your cat. Seeing blood in your cat’s urine can be alarming, but it's a good first step to have her on antibiotics, as bladder infections are a common cause. Typically, you should start seeing an improvement in her symptoms within 48 to 72 hours after starting the medication.

Besides a bladder infection, other potential causes include urinary tract stones, stress-induced cystitis, or more rarely, tumors. In the meantime, ensure she has easy access to fresh, clean water to encourage her to drink often—hydration can help flush out her bladder. You might also consider offering wet food to increase her fluid intake.

Keep a close watch on her behavior over the next few days. If she seems to be in pain, is straining to urinate, has a reduced appetite, or if you notice a change in her normal habits, a more urgent issue could be at hand. It’s important to monitor the situation closely.

For peace of mind and more tailored advice, I recommend booking a video consult with us at Dial A Vet. We can take a closer look and discuss any further steps to ensure your furry friend feels better soon.

The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. By using this forum, you acknowledge these limitations and agree to seek in-person veterinary advice for all your pet's health needs. View our content guidelines.

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
