I’m really worried about my sweet 9-year-old girl, Bella. Over the past few days, she’s been struggling to pee, and it's breaking my heart to see her in discomfort. I’ve taken her to two different vets who ran tests and did ultrasounds, but they both couldn’t find the root cause of her issue. They ruled out the usual suspects like bladder stones and UTIs, but she still squats in the yard and struggles to get more than a few drops out. She’s starting to seem more lethargic, and it’s just not like her at all. She’s usually so full of energy, and now she’s just not herself. Has anyone else been through something like this? I'm desperate for any advice or suggestions on what we can do or what else we should look at. I just want to get her back to her happy, healthy self.
Thank you for reaching out with your concern. I can imagine how worrying it must be to see your dog struggling to urinate. When a dog has difficulty urinating, it can be due to several potential causes. These can range from urinary tract infections, bladder stones or crystals, to more complicated issues like bladder or neurological disorders. Given your dog's age, it's also important to consider any age-related changes that may contribute to this problem.
At home, ensure your dog has plenty of fresh water, as hydration can sometimes help flush out minor irritations. Provide a calm environment and allow frequent, stress-free, bathroom breaks. You might also try gently massaging your dog's lower abdomen, although this should be done very carefully.
However, here are some signs to watch for that would indicate a more serious issue: blood in the urine, straining for more than 24 hours, lethargy, vomiting, or signs of pain. These symptoms require immediate veterinary attention, as they could suggest a blockage or other critical condition.
Since this issue has persisted despite visits to two vets, it may be helpful to book a video consult with one of our Dial A Vet specialists. They can offer a fresh perspective and guide you on the next best steps to get your furry friend feeling better.
The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's
not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely.
For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional.
