Question:

My feline is new to IBD, need guidance

I’m really in need of some advice and support right now. My sweet kitty, Luna, has just been diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease, and honestly, I’m feeling completely overwhelmed. I’ve noticed her struggling with tummy issues and losing weight over the last month, but hearing the vet confirm IBD was just heart-wrenching. They’ve suggested switching her to a special diet, but I have no idea where to start. There are so many brands and options out there, I just feel lost. Plus, she's become so picky since all this started, and I’m worried she won’t eat what's recommended. Have any of you gone through something similar with your fur babies? Any food brands, transition tips, or general advice that helped you manage this would be so appreciated. I just want Luna to feel better and get back to her mischievous self. Thanks in advance for your help.

Answer:

Hello there! It sounds like you’re dealing with a bit of a challenge, but don’t worry—I’m here to help you navigate your feline’s inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). IBD in cats occurs when their stomach or intestines become chronically inflamed. This can lead to symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss, and changes in appetite.

Potential causes of IBD could include an abnormal immune response, bacterial overgrowth in the gut, or even food allergies. At home, try to keep your cat on a consistent, high-quality diet. Often, feeding them a hypoallergenic or novel protein diet can help soothe their tummy troubles. Be sure to introduce any new foods gradually to avoid further gastrointestinal upset.

Keep an eye out for concerning signs such as persistent vomiting, severe diarrhea, noticeable weight loss, or drastic changes in eating or drinking habits. If you observe any of these, it's important to seek veterinary care promptly.

I recommend you book a video consult with a vet on Dial A Vet. This way, we can discuss your kitty’s condition in more detail and create a tailored plan that best suits their needs. Your furry friend's health and well-being are our top priorities, and we're here to support you both every step of the way.

  Book A Vet Consultation
The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. By using this forum, you acknowledge these limitations and agree to seek in-person veterinary advice for all your pet's health needs. View our content guidelines.

It was so easy, I needed some eye drops for my dog and thinking about going to the vet on a weekend made me nervous about the cost involved. Dial A Vet was a much simpler, cheaper option with faster results. Within 10 minutes of the call, I had the medicine I needed for my dog without an expensive consultation.

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
