My dogs eyelids are really swollen and our vet doesn't know what's causing it.

I’m kind of freaking out right now and could really use some advice. For the past couple of days, my dog, Max, has had these super swollen eyelids and it's not going away. It came on out of nowhere, and our vet is just as stumped as I am. I’ve noticed the swelling seems worse in the evenings, especially after he's been outside, and he’s been rubbing his face against the couch a lot, which he never used to do. I’ve tried changing his food and washing his bedding, but nothing seems to help. Max is usually such a happy pup, but he’s been moping around looking all sad and uncomfortable. Has anyone experienced something like this before and might have a clue about what’s going on? I'm desperate for any tips that might help him feel better.

Answer

I completely understand why you're worried. Swollen eyelids in dogs can be quite concerning, especially when the cause isn't immediately clear. There are a few possibilities that might be causing this, such as an allergic reaction, an insect bite, or even something as simple as a foreign object irritating the eye.

An allergic reaction can be to anything from food to environmental allergens like pollen or dust. In this case, you might notice your dog also scratching other parts of their body or displaying signs of discomfort. Try to keep track of any new foods or changes in their environment that might coincide with the swelling.

For temporary relief, you can apply a cold compress to the swollen area to help reduce inflammation and soothe discomfort. Ensure the compress is not too cold and discomforting for your pet, and never apply it directly to the eye.

Monitor for any additional symptoms such as excessive redness, discharge from the eye, or if your dog seems to be in pain or is frequently pawing at their eye. These symptoms might indicate a more serious issue, like an infection, that would require immediate veterinary attention.

If the swelling persists or worsens, I recommend booking a video consult with Dial A Vet. We can take a closer look and help you determine the best course of action for your furry friend.
