My dog was hit by a scooter

I'm feeling pretty shaken up right now and could really use some advice. Earlier today, my poor pup, Max, got hit by a scooter while we were on our usual walk around the neighborhood. It all happened so fast. One moment, Max was happily trotting beside me, and the next, there was this loud screech and he was on the ground. The guy riding the scooter was super apologetic and stayed with us until we got Max to the vet, but I'm still freaking out. The vet says he has a couple of bruised ribs and a sprained leg but thankfully no fractures or internal injuries. Max seems pretty down and is limping around. He's usually so full of energy, and seeing him like this breaks my heart. I’m trying to keep him comfortable, but I'm not entirely sure what else I should be doing to make sure he recovers well. Any tips for helping him heal, or just any comforting words, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, everyone.

Answer

I'm so sorry to hear about your dog's accident. It's understandable to be worried, and I'm here to help you navigate this situation calmly. First and foremost, check for any visible injuries such as bleeding, cuts, or swelling. Even if your dog seems okay, they could still have internal injuries that aren't immediately apparent.

Some common signs of injury include limping, whining, reluctance to move, or any changes in behavior such as hiding or aggression. If you notice any of these, it's important to seek veterinary care as soon as possible.

For immediate care at home, if your dog is bleeding, apply gentle pressure with a clean cloth to help stop it. Monitor your dog for any signs of shock, like excessive panting or weakness. Keep them warm and comfortable, and try to limit their movement to prevent further injury.

Watch for serious signs such as difficulty breathing, pale gums, or if they seem unusually lethargic or unresponsive. These could indicate a serious internal injury that needs urgent veterinary attention.

If you have any doubts or if your dog's condition worsens, I recommend booking a video consult with a vet on Dial A Vet. They can provide a more detailed assessment and guide you through the next steps to ensure your furry friend gets the care they need.
