My dog not eating since I found out I was pregnant

I’m feeling really stressed and could use some advice. Ever since I found out I was pregnant a couple of weeks ago, my dog, Max, has been acting strange and hasn’t been eating much at all. He’s a four-year-old Golden Retriever and usually a total food lover, but now he just sniffs his bowl and walks away. I haven’t changed his food, and I make sure it’s fresh, but he doesn’t seem interested. He’s also been super clingy and follows me everywhere, sticking to me like glue. Has anyone else experienced something like this? Is he sensing the pregnancy, and could that be why he’s reacting this way? I’m worried about him and just want to make sure he’s okay. Any advice or similar experiences would be really appreciated!

Answer

Hello and congratulations on your pregnancy! I understand it can be a bit concerning when your furry friend suddenly isn’t as interested in their meals. Changes in the household, like a new pregnancy, can sometimes cause dogs to feel anxious or stressed, which might lead to a loss of appetite. Dogs are incredibly perceptive and may react to changes in your routine or even pick up on the different smells and emotions associated with your pregnancy.

In situations like this, try to maintain your dog's routine as much as possible. Offering smaller, more frequent meals and ensuring they have a quiet, comfortable place to eat can help. You might also want to add a bit of low-sodium broth or some cooked, unseasoned chicken to make their food more appealing.

Keep an eye on him and look for any additional signs that could indicate a more serious issue, such as vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, or weight loss. If these occur, or if he continues to refuse food for more than 24-48 hours, it's a good idea to consult a vet.
