My dog looks like it may have split his nail

Help, what do I do? My poor pup, Max, is limping around and it breaks my heart to see him like this. I noticed that one of his nails looks like it might be split, and I have no idea how it happened. He's normally so active and playful, so seeing him down like this is really worrying me. I tried to get a closer look, but he yelps whenever I touch his paw, and I’m afraid to mess with it too much in case I make it worse. I’m not sure if I should try to clip it myself or take him straight to the vet. I’ve never dealt with a split nail before, and I'm not even sure if that's what it is. Max is a pretty big dog, and handling him is tricky when he's in pain. Does anyone have experience with this? I feel so helpless watching him suffer!

Answer

Thanks for reaching out about your dog’s nail. A split nail can be quite uncomfortable for your furry friend, so it’s great that you're looking to help.

Nails can split from trauma, like catching it on something, excessive running, or sometimes from an underlying health concern. You’ll often notice limping, licking of the paw, or visible blood if they’re in pain.

To help at home, first, make sure your dog is calm and comfortable. You might try gently trimming the loose nail, being careful not to cause pain. Clean the nail with warm water to remove dirt and then apply a pet-safe antiseptic or a saline solution to prevent infection. Wrapping the paw in a light bandage can protect it from further injury. Try to keep your dog from licking or chewing at the nail, perhaps using an e-collar if needed.

Watch for signs like persistent bleeding, swelling, or any signs of infection like pus or extreme pain. These could indicate a more serious issue that needs veterinary care.

If the nail doesn't seem to improve, or you're unsure how to proceed, a video consult with a vet can provide you with more personalized guidance. Consider booking a session with us at Dial A Vet, and we'll be glad to help further!
