My dog just ate a live bird???

I’m completely freaked out right now and could really use some advice. My dog, Max, just caught and ate a live bird in our backyard—like, the whole thing, feathers and all—and I’m not sure what to do next. I always knew he had a strong prey drive, but I never thought he’d actually catch something! He’s acting totally normal since it happened, but I’m worried about what this might do to his stomach. Do I need to rush to the vet, or is there anything I should watch for in case he gets sick? I didn’t see any blood or anything, but I can’t stop thinking about what might be happening inside that fluffy belly of his. Does anyone have experience with this and can offer some guidance? Thanks in advance for any help!

Answer

Thanks for reaching out with your concern. It can be a bit alarming when our furry friends indulge in their natural instincts! Dogs sometimes catch and eat things they find outside, and birds are no exception.

In most cases, eating a bird won't harm your dog, but there are a few things you'll want to monitor. Some potential issues include gastrointestinal upset, parasites, or even an obstruction if bones get lodged in the digestive tract. Watch for signs such as vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, or a decreased appetite over the next few days. If you notice any of these symptoms, it’s a good idea to consult a vet right away.

At home, ensure your dog has plenty of fresh water and consider feeding a bland diet, like boiled chicken and rice, for a day or two to help soothe the stomach. Also, keep an eye on your dog's stools for any signs of feathers or bone fragments passing through.

If your dog starts coughing, gagging, or shows signs of abdominal pain, it's important to seek veterinary attention immediately, as these could be signs of an obstruction or other complications.
