I really need some advice because I'm at my wit's end with my dog, Max. He's always been a bubbly, joyful pup, but in the last two days, he's suddenly become very withdrawn and lethargic. He barely touches his food and has been ignoring his favorite toys, which is so unlike him. Normally, he's bouncing off the walls with energy! Last night, he started whining for no apparent reason, and today he's just lying around, all curled up in a corner, refusing even to go for his walk, which he usually loves. I'm worried something could be seriously wrong. Has anyone experienced this with their dog before? Could it be something he ate, or maybe he’s sick? Any advice or thoughts would really be appreciated, because I'm really stressed and want to help him get back to his usual happy self.
Hello there,
I understand that having your dog suddenly act strange can be really concerning, but let’s try to get to the bottom of it together. Dogs can display unusual behavior for a variety of reasons, including stress, diet changes, or even something they might have eaten—like garbage or spoiled food outside.
First, think about any changes in your home or routine that might be affecting your pup. Sometimes a new pet, guest, or even a change in weather can cause stress. Have there been any changes like that recently?
Keep an eye on your dog's physical health too. Check for signs like vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, staggering, or if they're not eating or drinking. These could point to potentially more serious issues, like an illness or injury that might need immediate attention.
At home, make sure your dog has a quiet, comfortable place to relax. Offer water and food if they're inclined to take it, but don’t force it. It's also a good idea to walk through the house and yard to check for anything they could have accidentally gotten into.
If you notice these more serious signs, or if their behavior doesn't improve soon, please consider booking a video consult with one of our vets at Dial A Vet. We can help you determine if your dog needs an in-person visit and guide you on the next steps to take.
Take care, and give your pup a gentle pat from me.
