My dog is going to die, how to i make her comfortable?

I'm really struggling here and could use some advice. My sweet golden retriever, Daisy, has been with me for the last 13 years and now it looks like we’re nearing the end of our journey together. The vet confirmed what I was dreading — she doesn’t have much time left. I'm devastated and my heart feels so heavy right now. I'm trying to focus on making these moments as comfortable and loving as possible for her. She's been off her food, and it feels like she's just not herself lately. Do any of you have suggestions on how to keep her comfortable or tips on what might help her eat a little? I really don’t want her to be in pain or discomfort. I'd appreciate hearing about what others have done in similar situations, it feels so overwhelming to go through this alone. Thank you all so much.

Answer

I'm so sorry to hear that your dog isn't feeling well. It's understandable to be worried about making her comfortable during this time. There are a few things you can do at home to help her feel as comfortable as possible.

First, ensure she has a quiet, comfortable spot in the house, away from too much noise or activity. A soft bed or blanket, in a calm environment, can help her relax. Keep her hydrated by offering fresh water; sometimes a splash of low-sodium chicken broth might tempt her to drink a little more.

Pay attention to her needs. If she's struggling to move, consider gently repositioning her every few hours to avoid sores and improve comfort. Monitoring her food intake is also crucial; if she's not eating, it might be helpful to offer bland foods like plain boiled chicken and rice to encourage her appetite.

Keep an eye out for any distressing signs such as labored breathing, severe pain, or inability to stand, as these may warrant immediate veterinary help.
