Appreciate the question — let's unpack this. It's not uncommon for dogs to munch on things like sticks, twigs, and acorns. While it might seem like a dietary deficiency, it's often more about exploring their environment. Dogs love to chew, and sometimes non-food items catch their interest.
In some cases, though, dogs can engage in this behavior if they have pica, a condition where they crave and eat non-food items. It's a possibility if your dog is showing other signs like eating non-food items frequently or having digestive issues.
At home, you can provide safe chewing alternatives, like dog-safe chew toys or raw bones, to satisfy their urge to chew. Make sure your dog’s diet is balanced with all the nutrients they need. Consulting with a veterinarian about their diet can help rule out any nutritional deficiencies.
Watch for signs like vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, or abdominal pain, which could suggest that something they've ingested is causing issues. Acorns and corn cobs, particularly, can lead to serious digestive blockages.

My dog insists on eating sticks, twigs, acorns, corn cobs and similar, is this an indicator of some sort of dietary defficiency?
I don’t know what’s going on, but I’m getting a little worried about my dog, Charlie. Lately, he’s been obsessing over eating sticks and random bits like twigs and acorns whenever we go for our walks in the park. This morning, he even tried to snack on a corn cob he found under a picnic table. I try to stop him, but he’s quick, and it’s almost like he's on a mission. I've been feeding him the same kibble he’s always had, but now I’m wondering if he’s missing something in his diet? Maybe there’s some nutrient he’s not getting? He's his usual playful self, but this odd eating habit has me stumped. Has anyone else dealt with something like this?
