Thanks for reaching out with your concern. What you're describing sounds like something that should definitely be looked into further. The purple bruises with a crusty, itchy ring might be a condition called vasculitis, which is an inflammation of the blood vessels. This can cause bruising and sometimes lead to crusty skin lesions.
Another possibility is a reaction called a "hot spot," which starts as an itchy area that the dog continually licks or scratches, leading to a secondary infection and discoloration. Allergic reactions, bug bites, or even specific skin infections can also manifest this way.
At home, you can gently clean the area with a mild, dog-safe antiseptic and try to prevent your pup from scratching or licking the spots by using an Elizabethan collar. Keep an eye on the bruising; if it spreads quickly, seems painful, or if there are any signs of swelling, lethargy, or fever, these could indicate a more serious condition that requires immediate veterinary attention.
To be sure of what's going on and to prevent any potential risks, it's best to have a professional take a closer look. Why not book a video consult with us at Dial A Vet? We can guide you through what might be happening and what steps to take next.
My dog gets these odd purple bruises with a crusty itch ring around them.
Help! I’m really worried about my dog and could use some advice. Over the past couple of weeks, I've noticed these strange purple bruises showing up on his skin. What’s even more concerning is that each bruise has a crusty, itchy ring around it. My dog keeps scratching at them, which I’m afraid is making things worse. I can’t figure out what’s causing them, and they seem to be getting worse. I haven't changed his diet or his shampoo recently, and we haven’t gone anywhere new that could trigger an allergic reaction. It breaks my heart to see him this uncomfortable, and I can't get an appointment with our vet until next week. Has anyone experienced something similar with their pet, or have any suggestions on what might be going on or how I can help him in the meantime? Any insights would really mean a lot!
