my cat won't drink water or pee :(

I really need some advice. I've noticed my cat, Muffin, hasn't been drinking water for the past couple of days, and she hasn't used her litter box to pee either. I'm starting to get worried because normally she's quite the little hydrant, always lapping up her water like there's no tomorrow. I don't want to jump to conclusions, but I can't shake this feeling that something might be wrong. She's eating her food okay, but seems a bit more lethargic than usual, and her usual playful antics are missing. I've tried offering her water in different bowls and even added a little wet food to tempt her, but nothing is working. It breaks my heart to see her like this. Has anyone else experienced this with their cats? I'd love any suggestions before I head to the vet. Thanks so much!

Answer

Hello there,

I'm sorry to hear that your cat isn't drinking water or urinating—it’s definitely a situation that needs attention. In cats, not drinking water can quickly lead to dehydration, which is especially concerning if they’re also not peeing. This might indicate several potential issues.

Cats can sometimes avoid drinking because of stress, changes in their environment, or even because they don't like the water's taste or the bowl. Medical issues such as kidney disease, urinary tract infections, or blockages could also be at play here, which are more serious.

At home, try enticing your cat to drink by offering fresh water frequently, adding ice cubes, or using a cat fountain since some felines prefer running water. You could also try flavoring the water with a bit of tuna juice or chicken broth (low sodium). Additionally, ensure their litter box is clean and in a quiet, accessible location.

Monitor your cat closely for other signs such as lethargy, vomiting, straining to urinate, or a complete absence of urine. If you observe these or if your cat still refuses to drink, it’s crucial to get help promptly.

For a more tailored assessment and next steps, I highly recommend booking a video consult with a vet via Dial A Vet. It’s always best to err on the side of caution with our furry friends' health.

Take care!
