I'm really in need of some advice right now. My cat, Luna, who was visibly pregnant, just gave birth but unfortunately, the kitten didn't make it. It's breaking my heart, and I'm so worried for her. The thing is, I’m not sure if Luna has more kittens still inside her. She’s just kind of been laying in her little nesting area, and I don't want to disturb her too much, but I noticed she's still a bit plump. She's licking herself more than usual and seems a bit restless, but I can't tell if that's just because of the stress or something else. I’ve never dealt with anything like this before, and I honestly don’t know what to do next. Should I get her to a vet immediately, or is there something I can look for at home to determine if she’s done giving birth? I’m feeling so helpless right now and any guidance would be seriously appreciated. Thanks so much in advance.
Hello and thank you for reaching out. I'm so sorry to hear about your kitty's situation, and I understand your concern. It’s quite possible that your cat might have more kittens on the way. Sometimes, there can be a delay between the birth of kittens, which is normal. However, it’s important to make sure she doesn’t experience any complications or distress.
Here are some signs to keep an eye on: if your mama cat is having strong contractions without producing a kitten for more than 30 minutes, if she’s in obvious distress or discomfort, or if you notice any unusual discharge with a strong odor. These could indicate that she needs immediate veterinary attention.
In the meantime, ensure she’s in a quiet, comfortable environment with access to food, water, and a clean litter box. Keep her calm and give her plenty of love and reassurance.
If she seems healthy and stable but you're unsure about more kittens, a gentle abdomen massage can sometimes help you feel if more are present. But, it’s crucial to be very gentle to not harm her or any kittens.
For peace of mind and to ensure the health of both your cat and any potential kittens, I recommend booking a video consult with one of our vets here at Dial A Vet. They can provide more personalized advice and guidance.
