My Cat Touched a Dead Mice

I'm so freaked out right now and could really use some advice. I just caught my cat, Whiskers, with a dead mouse in his mouth. I have no idea where the mouse came from or how long it was dead, but Whiskers has been an indoor cat his entire life, and I didn't even know we had mice in the first place! Now I'm worried about him potentially getting sick from touching or even eating something that might be contaminated. I cleaned his mouth the best I could, but I’m panicking because I don't know if he might have ingested any part of it. Should I be rushing him to the vet immediately, or is there something I can watch for to make sure he’s okay? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Answer

Thank you for reaching out with your concern about your cat. It’s quite common for cats to encounter mice, and I'm here to help you navigate this situation.

Cats are natural hunters, so it’s not unusual for them to bring home a "gift" like a mouse. When a cat touches or plays with a dead mouse, the main concern is potential exposure to toxins or infectious diseases. Mice can carry parasites, bacteria, or viruses that could affect your cat, such as toxoplasmosis or leptospirosis.

At home, keep a close eye on your cat for any signs of illness, such as vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, or lack of appetite. Make sure your cat’s vaccinations and flea control are up to date, as these measures can help prevent the spread of diseases.

If possible, clean your cat’s paws and mouth with a damp cloth to remove any traces of the mouse. Keep an eye out for any unusual behavior or symptoms; if your cat starts showing signs like difficulty breathing, persistent vomiting, or severe lethargy, these could indicate a more serious issue requiring immediate veterinary attention.

I recommend scheduling a video consult to discuss this in more detail. A professional can offer tailored advice and decide if any further action is necessary. Feel free to book a session with one of our vets on Dial A Vet at your earliest convenience!
