My cat took off her cone

I'm really hoping for some advice or reassurance here because I'm kind of at my wit's end. So, my cat, Luna, had surgery a few days ago and the vet insisted on her wearing one of those plastic cones to stop her from licking the stitches. Somehow, she's managed to Houdini her way out of it—twice! I've tightened it just enough so it's snug but not uncomfortable. But there she is, free of it yet again, casually washing herself like it’s just another Tuesday. I'm really worried about her messing with the stitches and getting an infection or something. Should I keep trying to put it back on, or does anyone have tricks to secure it better? Any advice on alternative solutions would be amazing too. I've tried to distract her with all her favorite toys and even extra treats, but nothing seems to keep her occupied for long. I'd really appreciate any tips because I just want to keep my fur baby safe and healthy! Thanks so much, you guys.

Hi there! It sounds like your kitty is quite the escape artist! Cats can often find ways to remove their cones, which can be a bit concerning if she's recovering from a procedure or injury.

Firstly, you might want to check why she’s trying to remove it. Cats often dislike wearing cones because they can be uncomfortable or make it difficult to eat or drink. Make sure her cone is the right size—not too tight, but snug enough to stay on. Sometimes, soft cones or inflatable collars are a more comfortable option if she needs to continue wearing one.

If she has stitches or a healing wound, it’s important to keep her from licking or scratching at it. You can try distracting her with toys or giving her a cozy space where she feels comfortable without needing to groom excessively.

Monitor the area closely. Watch for signs of redness, swelling, or discharge, which could indicate an infection or irritating stitches. If you notice these symptoms, or if she seems especially anxious or in pain, it might be a sign to reach out for veterinary advice.

If the cone battle continues or you're worried about her healing process, consider booking a video consult with one of our vets on Dial A Vet. They can guide you on adjusting her cone or suggest alternative measures. Wishing you both the best!
