My cat keeps trying to kill himself.

Something weird just happened and I'm really worried about my cat, Whiskers. Around 2 a.m. last night, he tried to jump out the window from my third-floor apartment. I've noticed this isn't the first time he's pulled a stunt like this—it started about a week ago with him attempting to dive into the bathtub while the water was running, and just the other day, he leaped off the bookshelf like he had a death wish. I'm at my wit's end because he’s never acted like this before. I'm scared to leave him alone or even let him near open windows. Has anyone else experienced something like this? I don't know if he's sick or stressed or if there's something I'm missing. Any advice would really help right now.

Answer

I completely understand why you're worried. It sounds like your cat is engaging in some alarming behaviors. Let's see if we can get to the bottom of this. Cats often do things that seem dangerous, such as jumping from high places, chewing on cords, or trying to escape through windows. These actions might seem intentional, but they're usually driven by curiosity, stress, boredom, or instinct.

For instance, if your cat is overly curious, consider providing more safe stimuli like toys, cat trees, and scratching posts. Ensure your cords are covered or tucked away, and secure windows with screens to prevent escape attempts.

It's important to recognize signs that might indicate a more serious underlying issue. Watch for symptoms like changes in eating or drinking habits, lethargy, hiding, vocalizing more often, or grooming excessively. These could suggest stress or a medical condition that needs attention.

Behavior like this can sometimes be a call for help, pointing to mental or physical health issues. If your cat's behavior continues or you've noticed any concerning changes, it's a good move to book a video consult with one of our vets at Dial A Vet. They can help pinpoint the issue and guide you on the next steps for your furry friend's health and safety.
