Help, what do I do? So my cat, Luna, started acting really strange last night around 10. She’s usually a little ball of energy, jumping on everything and chasing shadows, but suddenly she’s become super quiet and keeps hiding under the couch. I tried giving her some treats and she just sniffed them and walked away, which is so not like her. It breaks my heart seeing her like this, and when I tried to pick her up, she let out this horrible cry and swatted at me, which she never does. I'm freaking out a bit because she’s my baby and I don’t want her to be in pain. Has anyone else gone through something like this? What should I do?
I completely understand why you're worried. Seeing a beloved cat in pain can be distressing, and you're doing the right thing by seeking help. Cats can experience pain for a variety of reasons, such as injuries, dental issues, arthritis, internal issues, or even infections.
First, observe if there's any noticeable change in your cat's behavior. Cats often hide their pain well, so look for signs like limping, excessive grooming of a particular spot, increased vocalization, reluctance to move or jump, or hiding more than usual. If you suspect an injury, try to gently check for any swelling or sensitive spots, but be cautious, as handling painful areas might distress your cat more.
For some mild pain or discomfort, providing your cat with a warm, quiet, and comfortable space can help them feel a bit better. Ensure they have easy access to food, water, and a clean litter box, so they don't have to move too much if they're uncomfortable.
However, if your cat is not eating, seems lethargic, is showing any signs of severe distress, or if there's visible injury or swelling that seems urgent, it's important to get in touch with a vet as soon as possible. Some conditions can worsen quickly, and having a professional assess the situation is crucial.
