I'm really hoping for some advice or tips here. My sweet cat, Luna, turns into an absolute terror whenever we go to the vet. She's normally the most loving little furball at home, but once we get into that exam room, she hisses, growls, and does everything she can to escape her carrier. I’ve tried different tactics like playing calming music in the car, using a pheromone spray, and even giving her treats, but nothing seems to help. The vet staff is amazing and patient, but I feel horrible watching her cause such chaos every time. I dread vet visits more than I can express because it’s stressful for both of us, and I know she’s not getting the best care when she’s so agitated. Has anyone else dealt with this? How did you help your cat become more comfortable and calm at the vet? Would love any suggestions or similar experiences! Thanks so much in advance.
Hi there! I completely understand how stressful it can be for both you and your kitty when vet visits aren’t easy. Cats are naturally territorial, and going to the vet can feel like a big disruption in their world.
There are a few potential reasons for this aversion. It could be due to a past negative experience or simply because the unfamiliar sights, sounds, and scents at the vet's office are overwhelming. Some cats are naturally more anxious, which can make them particularly resistant to visiting the vet.
For at-home care, try creating a comfortable space for your cat by using pheromone sprays or diffusers that help reduce anxiety. Routine is important, so use the same carrier for transport and let them get used to it at home with treats and bedding inside. On the way to the vet, cover the carrier with a light towel for a sense of security.
Keep an eye out for any behavior that might indicate more significant stress or health issues, such as excessive grooming, changes in eating patterns, or hiding more than usual.
Given your cat's sensitivity, a video consult with one of our vets on Dial A Vet could be a less stressful option. This way, your kitty can stay comfortable while we discuss her health together. Let us know if you’d like to set that up!
