Question:

My cat is allergic to something and we have no idea to what anymore

Help, I'm at my wits' end with my poor kitty, Luna. We've been struggling with what seems to be some kind of allergy for months now, and it's only getting worse. Her skin is super itchy, and she's been scratching herself raw, to the point of bleeding. It breaks my heart to see her in so much discomfort. We've already tried changing her food three times, switched to hypoallergenic detergent for her bedding, and even cleaned the entire apartment top to bottom to eliminate any possible irritants. I've consulted with the vet multiple times, and they've run out of suggestions and options. It's hard watching her suffer and not knowing how to help. Has anyone dealt with something like this before? I’m open to any advice or experiences you might have. Thanks in advance!

Answer:

Thanks for reaching out. Allergies in cats can stem from various sources, including food, flea bites, and environmental factors like dust or pollen. It's often a process of elimination to pinpoint the exact trigger.

Food allergies typically involve proteins, so you might want to try an elimination diet with hypoallergenic food and slowly reintroduce potential allergens. For fleas, even if they aren't visible, it's good to ensure that your cat is on regular flea prevention. Environmental allergies are a bit trickier; try to keep your home as dust-free as possible and minimize your cat's exposure to pollen, especially during peak seasons.

At home, you can try bathing your cat with a gentle shampoo, which might relieve some symptoms. Keep your cat’s skin hydrated with a vet-recommended moisturizer.

However, watch for signs that might indicate a more serious issue, such as excessive scratching, hair loss, skin sores, or any respiratory issues like sneezing or coughing. If any of these are present or if your cat seems uncomfortable, it’s best to consult with a vet.

To get a comprehensive plan tailored for your cat's needs, booking a video consultation with one of our vets at Dial A Vet could be a great next step. They're here to help you and your feline friend find relief!

The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. By using this forum, you acknowledge these limitations and agree to seek in-person veterinary advice for all your pet's health needs. View our content guidelines.

It was so easy, I needed some eye drops for my dog and thinking about going to the vet on a weekend made me nervous about the cost involved. Dial A Vet was a much simpler, cheaper option with faster results. Within 10 minutes of the call, I had the medicine I needed for my dog without an expensive consultation.

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
