Question:

My cat has scabs on her chin that will not go away.

I'm feeling really worried about my sweet kitty, Luna. I've noticed that she's been developing these rough, scabby spots on her chin that just won't seem to heal. It's been a few weeks now, and despite trying to gently clean the area with a damp cloth, nothing seems to help. They're not red or inflamed, but they seem to be uncomfortable for her, as she keeps scratching at them occasionally. I haven't changed her food or anything in her environment recently. Has anyone else experienced anything like this with their cats? I've considered taking her to the vet, but I wanted to ask for advice here first in case there's something I haven't thought of. Any suggestions or thoughts on what might be causing this would be really appreciated!

Answer:

Hi there! It sounds like you're dealing with something that's quite common in our feline friends. The scabs on your cat's chin are often a sign of feline acne, which is similar to what humans experience but happens due to clogged hair follicles rather than oil glands.

Several factors can contribute to this condition, including stress, allergies, or even reactions to plastic food and water dishes. A simple first step is to switch to stainless steel or ceramic bowls, as they are less likely to harbor bacteria. Make sure to keep these dishes clean, washing them daily to reduce the risk of infection.

Gently clean your cat’s chin with a warm, damp cloth or a mild antiseptic solution to help keep the area clean. Avoid picking at the scabs, as this can lead to irritation or infection.

If you notice any swelling, pus, or if your cat seems unusually uncomfortable or is scratching excessively, these could be signs of a more serious infection or allergic reaction. In such cases, it's essential to consult with a vet, as your cat may need a more tailored approach to manage the condition.

I'd recommend scheduling a video consult with one of our vets here at Dial A Vet. They can determine if there's an underlying issue that needs addressing and guide you through the next steps to get your furry friend feeling better soon.

It was so easy, I needed some eye drops for my dog and thinking about going to the vet on a weekend made me nervous about the cost involved. Dial A Vet was a much simpler, cheaper option with faster results. Within 10 minutes of the call, I had the medicine I needed for my dog without an expensive consultation.

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
