My cat has one eye a little bit more dilated than the other

I’m feeling kind of anxious and would really appreciate some advice. I’ve got an amazing little furball named Luna who's been with me for about three years now. She’s always been super healthy, so I’m kinda freaking out over something I noticed today. Her left eye is just slightly more dilated than her right, and I can’t figure out why. It's only a little difference, but I know cats can be good at hiding when they're not feeling well, so I’m worried it might be something serious. She seems to be acting normal otherwise—eating, playing, and being her usual mischievous self. Has anyone else experienced something like this with their cat? Should I be rushing to the vet, or could it be just a weird kitty quirk? Every little bit of insight would really help calm my nerves right now. Thanks so much in advance!

Answer

Hello! It sounds like you're noticing something a little peculiar with your cat's eyes. A difference in pupil size, known as anisocoria, can happen for a variety of reasons. It might occur due to a simple cause like a minor eye irritation or a change in lighting. However, it could also indicate something more serious like an eye injury, glaucoma, or an issue with the nervous system.

First, try to observe if your cat is squinting or rubbing her eye—these could be signs of discomfort or irritation. At home, keep her indoors in a calm, dimly lit room to reduce stress on her eyes. If she allows it, gently wipe around her eye with a clean, damp cloth to ensure there's no debris.

Keep an eye out for any additional symptoms such as discharge, redness, excessive tearing, or any behavioral changes like lethargy or loss of appetite. These could suggest a more serious issue that needs veterinary attention.

I recommend scheduling a video consult with a vet through Dial A Vet. This way, they can assess your cat more closely and guide you on the next steps to ensure she receives the appropriate care. Rest assured, you’re doing the right thing by seeking advice for your feline friend!
