I need some advice and I'm feeling pretty overwhelmed right now. My cat Luna has been diagnosed with epilepsy, and our vet prescribed her anti-seizure medications. Everything seemed straightforward until I started the dosage they recommended. It just doesn't sit right with me. Luna has been really lethargic and wobbly ever since we started the meds. She used to be so playful and energetic, and now she barely responds to her favorite toys or even when I call her name. I’m terrified I’m making her worse by giving her too much or too little. The vet said this might happen initially, but it feels like she’s a completely different cat. Has anyone else gone through this? I’m worried and don’t know if I should be adjusting her dosage on my own or wait it out as advised. Any thoughts or similar experiences would really help right now.
Thanks for reaching out and sharing your concern about your kitty's medication. It’s completely understandable to have questions about this. When it comes to managing epilepsy in cats, finding the right dosage of anti-seizure medication is crucial, but it can take some time to get it just right.
If you’re worried that the dosage seems too high or too low, it's important to monitor your cat's behavior closely. Signs like increased lethargy, unsteadiness, or reduced coordination can indicate the dosage might be too high. Conversely, if she's still experiencing seizures frequently, the dosage might be too low.
At home, keep a diary of any seizures, noting the duration and what she was doing before they started. This record will be invaluable for your vet to adjust the medication as needed. Ensure she’s comfortable and in a safe environment where she can't hurt herself if a seizure occurs.
Keep an eye out for any drastic changes in appetite, behavior, or if she’s showing signs of jaundice (yellowing of the eyes and gums), as these could be symptoms that need urgent attention.
This is definitely something you'll want to discuss with a vet to make sure your cat gets the care she needs. I’d recommend scheduling a video consult with one of our Dial A Vet professionals to discuss adjusting the dosage and address any side effects you might be noticing. Take care!
