Question:

My cat got diagnosed with potentially pancreas cancer yesterday

I'm really struggling and could use some advice or just support. Yesterday was one of the toughest days of my life. My sweet cat, Muffin, was diagnosed with what the vet suspects to be pancreatic cancer. She's been with me for over 8 years now—my little shadow, my cuddle buddy, my everything. It all started when she began losing weight rapidly, even though her appetite seemed normal. I took her to the vet, thinking maybe it was just a tummy bug or something manageable, but hearing the word "cancer" just floored me. The vet mentioned some tests they can do to be sure, but I'm terrified of what they might find. I haven't stopped crying, and I'm trying to be strong for Muffin, but I'm so scared and feel incredibly helpless. I guess I'm seeking advice from anyone who's gone through something similar. How did you manage emotionally? What steps did you take for your fur baby's care? Thanks for any guidance you all can offer—it really means everything right now.

Answer:

I'm really sorry to hear about your cat's diagnosis. It's completely understandable to feel worried right now, but I'm here to help guide you through this.

Pancreatic cancer in cats, while not very common, can be quite serious. It generally affects older cats and may cause symptoms like weight loss, decreased appetite, vomiting, or changes in their usual behavior. Given this recent diagnosis, it's important to monitor your cat's eating and drinking habits closely. Encourage small, frequent meals to keep her comfortable, and ensure she has constant access to fresh water.

At home, maintain a calm and stress-free environment for your cat. This can help keep her comfortable and reduce anxiety, which might play a role in her overall well-being. You may want to set up a cozy "rest area" where she can relax undisturbed.

Watch for any signs of serious issues, like worsening vomiting, severe lethargy, noticeable jaundice (yellowing of the eyes or gums), or difficulties breathing. If you notice any of these or if her condition changes rapidly, it's crucial to seek veterinary attention immediately.

To get more tailored advice and keep tabs on your cat's health, I recommend scheduling a video consultation with one of the vets here at Dial A Vet. We can discuss the specifics of her situation and help you come up with the best plan moving forward.

The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. By using this forum, you acknowledge these limitations and agree to seek in-person veterinary advice for all your pet's health needs. View our content guidelines.

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
