Question:

My cat (f+/-14) has been puking for a few days after given preventative metacam

I'm really worried and could use some advice. My sweet old kitty, Luna, who's around 14, has been throwing up a lot lately, and I'm starting to panic. About a week ago, the vet recommended we start her on preventative Metacam for her arthritis, and everything seemed fine at first. But shortly after, she began vomiting—more often each day. I'm not sure if it's the meds or just a coincidence. I've stopped giving her the Metacam, but she still seems pretty miserable and lethargic. She’s my little shadow, and seeing her like this breaks my heart. Has anyone else experienced something similar with their cat? Any advice or insights would be so appreciated. I'm planning to take her back to the vet, but I'd love to hear your thoughts or experiences in the meantime. Thank you!

Answer:

Hello there! I'm sorry to hear that your kitty isn't feeling well. Vomiting in cats can be concerning, and there are a few reasons your feline friend might be experiencing this after being given Metacam, a pain relief medication.

Cats can be sensitive to certain medications, and Metacam can sometimes cause stomach upset, leading to vomiting. It's crucial to ensure that the dosage is correct for your cat's weight and that it's given with food, as this can help reduce stomach irritation.

At home, you might try offering bland food such as boiled chicken or plain rice in small, frequent amounts to give your cat's stomach a break. Make sure there is always fresh water available to prevent dehydration, especially if your kitty has been vomiting a lot.

Keep an eye on her closely for signs of a more serious issue, such as persistent vomiting over 24 hours, lethargy, lack of appetite, or if she seems to be in pain. If any of these signs appear, it's important to seek veterinary attention promptly.

I highly recommend booking a video consult with Dial A Vet so we can discuss your kitty's current condition in more detail and ensure she's getting the care she needs. Take care, and I hope she feels better soon!

It was so easy, I needed some eye drops for my dog and thinking about going to the vet on a weekend made me nervous about the cost involved. What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
