I’m feeling really concerned and need some advice. My cat, Oliver, has always been adventurous, but lately, he's been acting like he's on a mission to escape our house at any cost. It’s not just the usual trying to sneak out—he’s literally scratching up the door frames, trying to squeeze through any open window, and even attempted to dash out when the delivery guy came. I’m starting to notice that he’s limping a bit and his paw pads look sore, probably from all the attempts to claw his way out. I’m seriously worried all this stress and effort is starting to affect his health. I’ve tried playing with him more, new toys, even setting up a little enclosed space in the yard, but nothing seems to curb this newfound obsession. Has anyone else dealt with this? Any tips on how to keep him safe and happy would be greatly appreciated!
Hello there! It sounds like your adventurous kitty might be experiencing some strong urges to explore the great outdoors, and I can imagine how concerning that must be for you. Cats may show this behavior due to curiosity, the presence of other animals outside, or even a need for more stimulation or exercise.
This behavior can sometimes lead to stress or anxiety, which can affect his body in various ways, such as over-grooming, changes in appetite, or even digestive issues. If your cat is an intact male, he might be reacting to a nearby female in heat, which is another potential cause.
For at-home care, consider increasing your cat’s indoor enrichment with toys, scratching posts, and interactive playtime to keep both his mind and body engaged. Creating a small catio or a safe enclosed outdoor area might also satisfy his desire to explore without the risks of being outdoors unsupervised.
Watch for any signs that could point to more serious issues such as lethargy, sudden weight loss, changes in bowel habits, or any indications of pain, like limping or vocalizing.
If the behavior continues or you notice any of these concerning signs, it would be a great idea to book a video consult with one of our Dial A Vet experts. We can work together to ensure your feline friend remains happy and healthy!
