My cat died 30 mins after given DEWORMER

I’m really hoping someone here can help me understand what just happened. I’m completely heartbroken and at a loss. About an hour ago, I gave my sweet cat, Whiskers, his regular dose of dewormer—one that he’s taken before without any problems. He seemed fine at first, but within 30 minutes he was suddenly lethargic, and before I could get him to the vet, he was gone. I can’t stop thinking about what I could have done differently. Has anyone else had a similar experience? Is there something about the dewormer that could have caused this? I’d appreciate any insight or advice you can share. I just don’t want this to happen to anyone else. My heart is shattered. Thank you so much.

Answer

I'm so sorry to hear about your loss. Losing a pet is incredibly difficult, and it's understandable to have questions and concerns following such a sudden event. While it's uncommon, some cats can have adverse reactions to deworming medications, especially if there's an underlying health issue or if the cat was heavily infested.

Reactions can vary from mild digestive upset to severe allergic reactions or toxicity, depending on the product and health of the cat. Symptoms of a serious reaction might include vomiting, diarrhea, difficulty breathing, lethargy, or seizures. It's also possible the sudden passing was unrelated to the dewormer and due to another medical condition.

To understand what happened, consider any prior health changes or stress your cat may have experienced. If they were eating less, acting differently, or had any known health issues, these could provide clues.

For future pet care, always ensure dewormers are the correct dosage and type for your cat's age, weight, and health. After administering any medication, monitor for unusual behaviors or reactions—especially during the first few hours.

I highly recommend booking a video consult with one of our vets at Dial A Vet to discuss your cat's situation in more detail. They can offer guidance and help you make sense of this troubling event.
