Help, I'm really worried about my cat, Luna. She’s my little troublemaker and is always getting into things she shouldn’t, but this time she might have gone too far. I just caught her munching on some begonia petals from the plant I recently brought home. I didn’t even know she could reach it! I’ve read that begonias can be toxic to cats, so now I'm in a bit of a panic. She's acting normal so far, playing and purring like always, but I've heard symptoms can take a while to show up. Should I be rushing her to the vet immediately, or is there something I can do at home to help flush it out of her system? Would love your advice on what should be my next step. Thanks in advance!
Thanks for reaching out with your question. It’s always concerning when our furry friends get into something they shouldn’t! Begonias are mildly toxic to cats, so it’s good that you’re keeping a close eye on your kitty.
If your cat ate a relatively small amount, they might experience some drooling, vomiting, or possibly diarrhea. These signs are usually mild and can often be managed at home by keeping your cat comfortable and making sure they have access to fresh water. It's beneficial to keep them calm and monitor their eating habits. You can offer a bland diet, like boiled chicken, for a day or two until they are feeling better.
Watch out for more severe symptoms such as persistent vomiting, lethargy, or when they simply aren't acting like themselves, as these could indicate a more serious reaction. In these cases, it’s important to seek veterinary advice.
Feel free to book a video consult with one of our Dial A Vet professionals where we can discuss your cat’s symptoms in more detail and determine if further action is needed. Your kitty’s health is our top priority, so don’t hesitate to reach out for help!
