Question:

moving, neutered, new kitten, throwing up and diarrhoea

I'm really at my wit's end and could use some advice. We just moved into a new place a few weeks ago and brought a new kitten into our family, her name is Mochi. She's absolutely adorable, but she’s been having really bad diarrhea and throwing up since we got her. We made sure to get her neutered right after adopting her, and I’m wondering if the stress of the move and the surgery might be affecting her? I've been taking her to the vet, but so far they haven't been able to pinpoint anything definitive. I’m feeding her the same food the shelter recommended, so I'm really scratching my head here. Has anyone else experienced something like this when adding a new member to the family or moving homes? I’m so worried about her little tummy and it’s breaking my heart to see her like this! Any tips or similar experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:

Hi there,

I'm sorry to hear that your little one isn't feeling well. Moving to a new home can be quite overwhelming for a kitten, especially when they're still adjusting to a new environment. This stress, coupled with other changes like diet or exposure to new things, can sometimes upset their tummy, leading to vomiting and diarrhea.

Potential causes could include dietary changes, ingestion of non-food items, or even a mild viral or bacterial infection. Ensure your kitten is drinking plenty of water, as diarrhea can lead to dehydration. You might want to temporarily switch to a bland diet, like plain boiled chicken and rice, to see if this calms their stomach.

Keep an eye out for any worrying signs like persistent vomiting, blood in their stool, lethargy, or refusal to eat or drink. If any of these occur, or if the vomiting and diarrhea continue beyond a day or two, it's important to seek veterinary attention.

Remember, it's always better to check in with a professional to make sure your kitten gets the care they need. I’d recommend booking a video consult with one of our vets at Dial A Vet. They can help determine if a visit in person is necessary and guide you on the next steps to get your kitten feeling better soon.

Take care!

The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. By using this forum, you acknowledge these limitations and agree to seek in-person veterinary advice for all your pet's health needs. View our content guidelines.

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
