Moved House - Cat Coughing

I'm reaching out because I'm really worried about my cat, Luna. We just moved to a new house about a week ago, and she’s been acting kind of off since then. She’s an indoor cat and usually adapts pretty well to changes, but lately, she’s developed this weird cough. It’s not constant, but when she does cough, it sounds dry and hacking, kind of like she's trying to eject a hairball but nothing comes up. I've checked around the house for any dust or mold that might be bothering her, but everything seems normal. She's eating and drinking okay, but I can’t shake the feeling that something might be wrong. Luna means the world to me, and I hate to see her uncomfortable. Has anyone experienced this after a move, or could suggest what might be causing this? Any advice or similar experiences would be greatly appreciated!

Answer

Hi there! Moving can be stressful for everyone, including our feline friends. It’s not unusual for cats to develop symptoms like coughing after a change in their environment.

The stress from moving can sometimes trigger respiratory issues in cats. Dust and allergens from packing materials or hidden mold in a new home could also be culprits. If there's been construction or a fresh paint job, watch out for chemical irritants in the air.

To make things more comfortable for your cat at home, try creating a calm and familiar space with their favorite toys and bedding to help reduce stress. You can also ensure good ventilation by opening windows, if weather permits, to freshen the air.

Keep an eye out for signs that the coughing may be more serious. Watch if your cat is continuously coughing, having difficulty breathing, showing lethargy, or losing appetite. If you notice any of these symptoms, it could indicate something more severe, like an infection or a pre-existing condition exacerbated by the move.

It’s always best to err on the side of caution with breathing issues. I recommend booking a video consult with us at Dial A Vet so we can explore what might be going on and decide if your cat needs further examination or treatment. Take care, and give your kitty a comforting pet from me!
