Mice made a small hole in bottom of large dog food bad, should I discard the whole thing?

I need some advice and I'm really freaking out here. So I just discovered that some pesky little mice have gnawed a small hole in the bottom of my large dog food bag. I store it in the garage, and to be honest, I hadn’t noticed any issues until today when I saw some kibble scattered around. I'm really worried about whether the whole bag is now contaminated. It’s a brand-new bag, and I spent quite a bit on it, so throwing it away seems so wasteful. But of course, I don’t want to risk my dog's health if there's any chance of the food being unsafe. Should I just toss it out, or is this salvageable in some way? Has anyone dealt with this kind of situation before? I'd appreciate any guidance or suggestions.

Answer

Thanks for your question! It's always concerning when you find evidence of pests around your pet's food. When mice get into a bag of dog food, there are a few things to consider to ensure your dog's safety.

Firstly, mice can carry various bacteria and diseases, which can contaminate the food. Even if only a small portion of the food seems affected, there's a risk the contamination has spread throughout the bag. It’s usually safest to discard the entire bag to avoid any potential health issues for your dog.

To ensure this doesn't happen again, consider storing future bags of dog food in a sturdy, airtight container. This not only keeps pests out but also maintains the freshness of the food.

If you're concerned about your dog possibly ingesting contaminated food, watch for signs of illness such as vomiting, diarrhea, reduced appetite, or lethargy. These can indicate a problem and may require veterinary attention.
