Metacam do I put it in the fridge?

Help, what do I do? So, I just got back from the vet with my golden retriever, Max, and they gave us Metacam for his arthritis. They mentioned something about storage, but between Max being all cute and trying to lick everyone's face, and my brain running on half-battery from this crazy day, I totally blanked on the details. Now I’m home and it’s sitting on the counter, and I’m staring at it like it’s a math problem I can’t solve. Is it supposed to go in the fridge or just hang out at room temp? I’d hate to mess this up because Max is really needing relief, poor guy. Any advice from those of you who've danced this dance before?

Answer

I completely understand why you're worried about how to store Metacam. Metacam, also known as meloxicam, is a common anti-inflammatory medication prescribed for pain relief in pets, and storing it properly is crucial.

Metacam does not need to be refrigerated. It should be stored at room temperature, ideally between 68-77°F (20-25°C). Make sure it's kept in its original container and in a place that's dry and out of direct sunlight. Also, ensure it's out of reach of children and pets, as accidental ingestion can be dangerous.

If you notice any changes in the appearance of the liquid, such as discoloration, or if it's expired, don't use it and consult your vet for a new prescription.

Signs that something more serious is happening with your pet while on Metacam include vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, or black, tarry stools, which could indicate gastrointestinal issues. If these occur, it’s important to contact a veterinarian immediately.
