I’m in a bit of a bind and could use some advice. My heating system just decided to quit on me, and unfortunately, I can’t get anyone out to fix it until sometime next week. It’s been getting down to freezing temps at night here, and I’m really worried about how this is going to affect my two cats. They’re indoor-only, so they’re not used to any kind of cold weather, and I’ve never had to deal with anything like this before. I’ve set up cozy blankets and placed water bottles filled with hot water wrapped in towels where they usually sleep to try and keep them comfy. Is there anything else I can do to make sure my fur babies stay safe and warm until this heating nightmare is sorted? My stress levels are through the roof just thinking about them being uncomfortable. Any tips or similar experiences would be really appreciated!
Hello! I'm sorry to hear about the heating issue at your home. Cats generally do well in cooler temperatures but it’s important to ensure they're comfortable and safe during winter without central heating.
Firstly, check if your kitty is showing any signs of being too cold, such as shivering, cold ears, or lethargy. You can help keep them cozy by providing extra blankets and a warm bed to snuggle in. They might appreciate supervised time spent in a small room with a space heater or a heated pet mat, provided you can ensure their safety.
Cats love warmth, so consider keeping their beds or resting spots away from drafty windows or doors. Ensuring they have a variety of cozy spots to choose from around the house can make them more comfortable.
Watch for any changes in behavior or health, such as refusing food, excessive hiding, or difficulty breathing. These could indicate your cat is too cold or facing another issue, and it would be a good idea to consult a vet if any of these signs arise.
If the temperature in your home remains low, it’s wise to have a backup plan such as staying with a friend or relative temporarily. Feel free to book a video consult with us if you have further questions or concerns. Stay warm!
