I'm really hoping for some advice or similar experiences. My sweet kitty, Luna, has been diagnosed with Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP), and to make matters worse, she's gone missing. I'm absolutely beside myself with worry. She's been managing okay with her condition, though the vet had warned us it could be serious eventually. Luna's an indoor cat, but she managed to slip through the backdoor yesterday evening. I've been combing the neighborhood non-stop searching for her, but no luck so far. Given her health, I'm terrified of how she's faring out there. Has anyone dealt with FIP in their cats before? How quickly does it typically progress without medication? I'm also open to any tips on finding her. I've put up posters, asked neighbors, and left out her favorite food. Any thoughts or ideas would be hugely appreciated. Thank you in advance.
Hello there,
I'm so sorry to hear about your missing cat, especially with the challenges of FIP. FIP, or Feline Infectious Peritonitis, is a serious illness caused by a coronavirus, and it can certainly add to the worry when a beloved pet is missing.
Cats with FIP can exhibit symptoms like lethargy, loss of appetite, difficulty breathing, or swollen abdomen if it's the wet form. The dry form can cause more vague symptoms like neurological issues or jaundice. If your cat isn't currently showing overt symptoms, they may still act very differently, potentially explaining a wandering tendency.
While you're searching, consider leaving out some of your cat’s favorite things, like a bed or blanket, and some food, to coax them back home. Cats often hide nearby, so they may hear you if you calmly call out during quieter hours.
When your dear cat returns, watch for signs of distress, dehydration, or any worsening symptoms. If you notice severe changes, like increased breathing difficulties or significant weight loss, it’s crucial to seek veterinary attention immediately.
Given the FIP diagnosis, I strongly recommend booking a video consultation with Dial A Vet. It will help us provide more specific guidance and support for your cat's health during this challenging time.
Take care, and I hope your furry friend is safe and sound back home soon!
