Question:

Looking For Opinions on How We Are Proceeding. Are We Missing Something?

I'm feeling pretty overwhelmed and could use some advice. Our beloved cat, Whiskers, has been acting strange these past few weeks. He's always been the playful type, bouncing around and chasing anything that moves, but lately, he's just been lethargic and not his usual self. We've taken him to the vet, and after a battery of tests, they said he might have a thyroid issue. We started him on medication, but it's been over a week and we haven't noticed much improvement. I'm getting really anxious here, just staring at him hoping for a sign that he's getting better. We've tried changing his diet and giving him more water, but honestly, we're grasping at straws. Am I missing something? Do any of you have experience with this or suggestions on what else we can try? I just want my playful furball back. Thanks in advance for any help!

Answer:

Hi there! It sounds like you’re doing a great job being attentive to your pet’s health, which is always the first step. Without specific details on your pet's symptoms or condition, I’ll provide some general guidance.

When your pet seems off, there are various things to consider. Common issues like changes in appetite, energy levels, or unusual behaviors can often indicate something minor, such as stress or dietary needs, but they can also hint at more significant health concerns. It's important to monitor for symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, persistent coughing, difficulty breathing, or any noticeable pain. These could be signs of a more serious illness.

At home, ensure your pet stays well-hydrated and has a comfortable environment. Offer a balanced diet and try to minimize stressors. Pay close attention to any changes in behavior or physical symptoms.

If your pet shows any alarming signs—difficulty breathing, blood in vomit or stool, seizures, or extreme lethargy—it’s crucial to seek veterinary attention quickly. Immediate care might be necessary in those cases.

For a more tailored approach, I recommend scheduling a video consult with us at Dial A Vet. We can discuss your pet’s specific symptoms and help you determine the best next steps. Looking forward to assisting you further!

The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. By using this forum, you acknowledge these limitations and agree to seek in-person veterinary advice for all your pet's health needs. View our content guidelines.

It was so easy, I needed some eye drops for my dog and thinking about going to the vet on a weekend made me nervous about the cost involved. Dial A Vet was a much simpler, cheaper option with faster results. Within 10 minutes of the call, I had the medicine I needed for my dog without an expensive consultation.

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
