Question:

Kitten w/t stomach issues, some fresh blood in stool.

I’m really hoping for some advice or even just reassurance. I have a little kitten named Luna who I recently adopted, and she's been having some stomach issues that have me pretty worried. She's around 10 weeks old, and while she was initially adjusting well, I've noticed that she’s been having diarrhea for the past couple of days. Today, I found some fresh blood in her stool. I tried not to panic, but I’m honestly freaking out a bit because she’s so tiny, and I want to make sure I’m doing everything right for her. She’s still playing and eating, although maybe not as much as before. Has anyone else experienced something like this with their kittens? I’d appreciate any tips or suggestions on what could be causing it or if there’s something I should be doing before I manage to get her to the vet. Thanks in advance for your help!

Answer:

Hello there,

I'm so sorry to hear your kitten is experiencing tummy troubles. Seeing blood in their stool can be concerning, but let’s navigate this together. One reason might be dietary changes or a new food that isn't agreeing with their young tummy. Parasites, such as worms, are also common in kittens and can cause blood in their stool. Additionally, infections or even stress from a new environment could be factors.

At home, make sure your kitten has plenty of hydration—fresh water available at all times is key. You can also try feeding a bland diet, like plain boiled chicken and rice, to see if it helps settle their stomach temporarily.

Keep an eye on the frequency and amount of blood, as well as any signs of diarrhea, vomiting, or lethargy. These could signal a more serious issue that would need prompt veterinary care. If the symptom persists over a day or two, or you notice any of these more severe signs, it's crucial to reach out to a vet.

To get a more specific action plan and peace of mind, I highly recommend scheduling a video consult with Dial A Vet. Our team can offer detailed guidance suited to your kitten’s needs and help ensure they're back to their playful self soon.

The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
