Question:

Kitten went from nearly dying to perfectly normal, reason unknown

I'm really hoping to get some guidance here because I'm at my wit’s end. About two weeks ago, I found my 10-week-old kitten, Luna, completely lifeless on the floor. Her breathing was shallow and she was barely responsive. I rushed her to the emergency vet, prepared for the worst. Shockingly, after oxygen therapy and some meds, she bounced back within hours. The vets ran every test they could think of—blood work, x-rays, you name it. Everything came back normal. Now she’s playing like nothing ever happened, but I can’t shake the fear it’ll occur again. Has anyone experienced anything similar with their pets? The not knowing is driving me nuts, and I just want to make sure I'm doing everything I can for her. Any advice or insight would be really appreciated!

Answer:

Hello there!

It's wonderful to hear that your kitten is back to being their playful self! Cats, especially kittens, can bounce back quickly, but I know it must have been worrying for you. There are a few reasons your kitten might have seemed unwell before making this surprising recovery.

Kittens can sometimes experience sudden health changes due to things like minor infections, dehydration, or hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). They're quite sensitive to changes in their environment or diet, which can sometimes make them feel under the weather temporarily.

Now that your kitten seems normal, here are a few things you can do at home: ensure they have a quiet and comfortable space to rest, keep an eye on their eating and drinking habits, and maintain a consistent routine. Ensuring they're up-to-date with vaccinations and deworming is also vital for their overall health.

Watch for any signs of a more serious issue, such as lethargy, a lack of appetite, vomiting or diarrhea, or difficulty breathing. If any of these occur, it’s important to seek veterinary care right away.

To make sure everything is truly okay and to discuss any potential underlying causes, I'd recommend setting up a video consult with one of our vets on Dial A Vet. It's always better to be cautious with our furry friends!

Take care, and give your kitten a gentle cuddle from me!

The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. By using this forum, you acknowledge these limitations and agree to seek in-person veterinary advice for all your pet's health needs. View our content guidelines.

It was so easy, I needed some eye drops for my dog and thinking about going to the vet on a weekend made me nervous about the cost involved. Dial A Vet was a much simpler, cheaper option with faster results. Within 10 minutes of the call, I had the medicine I needed for my dog without an expensive consultation.

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
