Kitten refusing dry/wet food but enthusiastically eating treats

I'm really worried about my little furball and could use some advice. My 4-month-old kitten, Luna, has suddenly started turning her nose up at both her regular dry and wet food. She's usually a champ when it comes to mealtime, but for the past few days, she just sniffs it and walks away. What's got me puzzled is that she still goes absolutely nuts for her treats, gobbling them up without a second thought! I've tried changing her food, thinking maybe she just got bored, but no luck. It breaks my heart to see her not eating properly, and I'm concerned she might not be getting the nutrients she needs. Could something be wrong, or is she just being a picky eater? Any insights or experiences would be greatly appreciated!

Answer

Hi there! I understand how concerning it can be when your little kitten suddenly turns picky with their regular meals but is happy to munch on treats. Let's dig into what might be going on.

Kittens can be quite finicky, and there are several potential reasons for this behavior. It might be as simple as a preference for the taste or texture of treats over their regular food. Sometimes, if they've had a recent change in their diet or environment, it can cause temporary fussiness. Additionally, dental issues or mouth pain can make it uncomfortable for them to eat certain foods, but treats might be softer or easier to chew.

To encourage your kitten to eat regular food, try warming up their wet food slightly, as this can enhance the smell and make it more appealing. You can also mix a small amount of their favorite treat with the food to entice them. Offering multiple small meals throughout the day may also help.

Keep an eye out for any signs of illness such as vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, or any changes in behavior. These could indicate a more serious issue that needs veterinary attention.

If this persists, or you notice any concerning symptoms, I recommend booking a video consult with Dial A Vet. We'll be happy to take a closer look and provide personalized advice for your furry friend’s health and happiness!
