Question:

Kidney disease or not? Vet and I are confused.

I could really use some advice here, I'm feeling pretty lost. My sweet cat, Whiskers, has been really lethargic lately, and he’s not eating like he used to. I took him to the vet last week, and they ran some tests because they suspected it might be kidney disease, but the results came back inconclusive. The vet seemed as puzzled as I am, and now we don’t know what’s going on. Whiskers keeps drinking a lot of water and his fur doesn’t look as shiny as it used to. I'm just so worried about him, he’s my little buddy and I hate seeing him like this. Has anyone else dealt with something like this, where the signs point to kidney issues but the tests aren't definitive? I’d really appreciate any insight or advice on what to do next. Thank you so much!

Answer:

Hello there,

I know it can be really worrying when you're unsure about your pet's health, especially when kidney disease is a possibility. Let's break it down a bit to help you make informed decisions together with your vet.

Kidney disease can manifest in various ways, such as increased thirst and urination, weight loss, vomiting, or a decrease in appetite. Since these symptoms can overlap with other health issues, it’s no surprise that it’s a bit confusing. Some other conditions that might mimic kidney disease include diabetes, urinary tract infections, or even hyperthyroidism.

At home, ensure your pet is drinking enough water, as hydration is crucial for kidney health. You might also want to offer them a wet diet, which can help with fluid intake. Keep an eye out for any changes in behavior, appetite, or bathroom habits—these details can be very helpful for your vet.

However, if you notice signs like severe lethargy, difficulty breathing, or if your pet seems to be in pain, contact your vet as soon as possible. These could indicate a more serious condition that needs immediate attention.

While we can chat about possibilities, a video consult on Dial A Vet could be a great next step. It allows us to discuss your pet’s specific symptoms in detail and decide on any further tests or treatments needed.

Looking forward to helping you and your furry friend navigate this together!

The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. By using this forum, you acknowledge these limitations and agree to seek in-person veterinary advice for all your pet's health needs. View our content guidelines.

It was so easy, I needed some eye drops for my dog and thinking about going to the vet on a weekend made me nervous about the cost involved. Dial A Vet was a much simpler, cheaper option with faster results. Within 10 minutes of the call, I had the medicine I needed for my dog without an expensive consultation.

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
