I really need some advice and maybe just a place to vent a bit because I'm feeling pretty upset right now. I recently enrolled my dog, Max, in a two-week board and train program that was supposed to help with his anxiety and leash aggression. It wasn't cheap, but I thought it would be worth it for both of us. When I picked him up yesterday, he seemed... different. He’s been unusually timid and almost scared, not like his normal happy self. The trainers said he did well, but they were a bit vague about what techniques they used. Max developed a slight limp, which they assured me was because he played too hard. I noticed a few small scratches on him too. I'm wondering if my feelings are justified, or am I just overreacting because I missed him? Has anyone else experienced something like this? Any advice on how to handle this situation would be much appreciated. Thanks for listening.
Hi there! It sounds like you might be anxious about your pet's experience with a board and train program, which is completely understandable. Let’s dissect what could be going on.
These programs can be beneficial but also stressful for some pets. Your pet might be overwhelmed by the new environment, different routines, or the presence of other animals. Watch for signs of stress such as excessive panting, whining, or changes in appetite. On the flip side, if your pet comes back home and seems tired or more relaxed, it might have been a good but tiring experience.
At home, you can help your pet by establishing or reinforcing a calm and consistent routine. Provide a comfortable rest area, engage in gentle activities, and be patient as your pet readjusts. If you're worried about behavior changes – like aggression or withdrawal – it’s worth exploring further.
Be aware of any alarming signs, like continuous bouts of diarrhea, vomiting, or extreme lethargy, as they can indicate a more serious health issue that needs quick attention.
