I'm really struggling and need some advice. I just brought home the cutest little puppy a week ago, and I'm completely in love, but I'm starting to feel uneasy about the vet clinic I've been taking him to. It's a VCA and every time we go in, they always seem to find something else that "needs" doing, and the bills are adding up so quickly. I was expecting some costs, but this feels excessive. They've already done a bunch of tests that I'm not convinced were necessary, and I'm worried they're just seeing dollar signs. I want to make sure my pup gets the best care, but I also don't want to be taken for a ride. Has anyone else experienced this, and how did you handle it? Should I start looking for a different vet, and if so, how do I find one that's trustworthy and reasonably priced? Thanks in advance. This little guy means the world to me, and I just want to do right by him.
Hello there! Congratulations on your new puppy—such an exciting time for you both! I understand that feeling unsure about veterinary care options can be a bit overwhelming, but I’m here to help guide you through it.
Puppies require a few essential health checks, vaccinations, and preventive care measures to start their life on the right paw. It's typical for vet visits to include vaccinations, a physical exam, and discussions about deworming. Every vet clinic has its pricing, but transparency is key, so never hesitate to ask for a breakdown of the costs and the necessity of each service offered.
To provide at-home care, ensure your puppy has a balanced diet and lots of clean water. Start training with gentle guidance and allow for plenty of playtime and rest. Also, keep your puppy's living space clean to help prevent infections.
Watch for any signs of illness, like coughing, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, or lethargy. These could indicate something potentially serious, and you’d want to get professional advice sooner rather than later.
If you're still unsure, I’d recommend booking a video consult with Dial A Vet. We can help ensure you and your puppy feel confident moving forward with health care tailored to your needs. We’re here to support you every step of the way!
The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's
not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely.
For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately.
