I've heard that if a pet is not fully dried after being bathed, they will get sick: i.e., it's bad for their skin/fur/hair. Is this true or a myth?

Something weird just happened after I gave my dog a bath yesterday evening, and now I'm kind of freaking out. Usually, he shakes off the water and just zooms around like a maniac until he dries off, but this time he seemed to dry slower than usual, and now I'm worried that I didn't dry him off well enough. I've heard that if dogs are left damp too long, it can cause skin issues or even make them sick. He seemed perfectly fine at bedtime, but today he's been a bit scratchy and lethargic. I'm not sure if I'm overreacting or if I should be seriously concerned. Has anyone else experienced something like this, or is this just a myth? Any advice would be really appreciated!

Answer

Thanks for reaching out with your question about your pet’s bath time care. The idea that a pet will get sick from not being fully dried after a bath is more myth than fact. However, while it's unlikely they'll catch a cold from simply being wet, there are a few things to consider that might affect their skin and coat health.

Dampness can indeed create an environment where bacteria and fungi thrive, especially in pets with thick coats. This may lead to skin irritations or infections. Some pets might also feel cold if they stay wet too long, which can be uncomfortable, especially in cooler climates or seasons.

For at-home care, it's best to dry your pet thoroughly after a bath. You can start by using a towel to remove excess water, and then use a hairdryer on a low, warm setting if your pet tolerates it. This is especially helpful for long-haired pets. Ensure there's no dampness behind their ears, in skin folds, or between their toes.

Watch for signs of skin irritation like redness, a sour odor, or your pet frequently scratching or licking certain areas. These could indicate a developing skin issue.

If you notice any concerning symptoms or if your pet seems unusually uncomfortable post-bath, I recommend booking a video consult with Dial A Vet. They can provide more tailored advice and help ensure your pet stays healthy and comfortable.
