Question:

Is this early signs of Parvo?

I'm really worried about my little pup, Max. He's a six-month-old Labrador, and he's usually so full of energy, but the past couple of days have been really rough. He’s been super lethargic, hasn’t been eating much, and worst of all, he's been having some pretty severe diarrhea, with a really bad smell. I initially thought maybe he just ate something weird, but then he started vomiting too. I’m freaking out because I’ve read some horror stories about Parvo, and I can’t shake the feeling that this might be it, even though I’ve done my best to keep his vaccinations up to date. Our vet can't see him until tomorrow, and I'm kind of spiraling here. Can anyone share their experiences or advice? I'd really appreciate any insight because I’m just feeling so helpless watching him suffer like this. Thanks, guys. 🥺

Answer:

Hello! I understand how worrying it can be when you're concerned about your pup's health. If you're suspecting parvovirus, it's important to note common signs such as diarrhea (often bloody), vomiting, a loss of appetite, and lethargy. The symptoms can appear suddenly, and affected puppies often look visibly unwell.

Parvo is a serious viral infection mostly affecting young, unvaccinated dogs. If your dog is showing these signs, it's crucial to act quickly, as early treatment can make a big difference.

At home, ensure your dog stays hydrated; offer small amounts of water frequently, but don't force them if they're not interested. If they're managing to keep fluids down, you might try a bland diet like boiled chicken and rice for a day or two, though this should not replace professional care.

Watch for signs of dehydration, such as gums that are pale or dry, and a loss of skin elasticity. Severe vomiting, worsening diarrhea, or extreme lethargy are red flags that require immediate veterinary attention.

I strongly recommend booking a video consult with one of our vets here at Dial A Vet. Early intervention is essential to get your furry friend back on track, and we’d love to guide you through getting the right care.

The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. By using this forum, you acknowledge these limitations and agree to seek in-person veterinary advice for all your pet's health needs. View our content guidelines.

It was so easy, I needed some eye drops for my dog and thinking about going to the vet on a weekend made me nervous about the cost involved. Dial A Vet was a much simpler, cheaper option with faster results. Within 10 minutes of the call, I had the medicine I needed for my dog without an expensive consultation.

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
