Help, I'm really worried and could use some advice. My cat, Jasper, who’s been my best buddy for nearly 9 years, has suddenly started acting quite strange. Over the last couple of weeks, he’s been losing weight despite eating like usual. He's also developed this odd lump near his ribcage, which doesn’t seem to be painful when I touch it, but it’s definitely new. I’m terrified it could be something serious, like cancer. I’m planning to take him to the vet, but the earliest appointment I could get isn’t for another week. In the meantime, I can’t stop thinking about it and it’s making me so anxious. Has anyone else experienced something like this with their cat? Could this lump be something other than cancer? I'd appreciate any insights or similar experiences you all can share while I wait impatiently for our vet visit.
Thanks for reaching out with your concern about your cat. I understand it can be worrying to think about cancer. Cats can develop lumps and bumps or exhibit changes in behavior for a variety of reasons.
Common causes of lumps include benign growths such as cysts or abscesses, which can result from infections. It's also possible for a lump to be a lipoma, which is a non-cancerous fatty growth. More serious causes could include tumors, which may be cancerous, but not always—some are benign.
Apart from physical lumps, other signs that may raise concern include unexplained weight loss, changes in appetite, increased thirst, or lethargy. Keeping an eye on these can provide clues about your cat's health.
For at-home care, you can gently monitor any lump's size, shape, and whether it's causing your cat discomfort. Ensure your cat maintains a healthy diet and consistent drinking habits.
If the growth rapidly changes in size, causes pain, or if your cat shows other worrying symptoms such as vomiting or difficulty breathing, it would be best to seek veterinary attention as soon as possible.
To get a more accurate understanding of what's happening with your cat, I recommend booking a video consult with a Dial A Vet expert who can guide you with advice tailored to your specific situation.
The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's
